Dementia 2020
The Next Phase
17th of April 2018
Royal Society of Medicine, London
The challenge on Dementia 2020 contains over 50 commitments that together aspire to make England the best country in the world for dementia care and support, for people with dementia to live; and to conduct dementia research.

The 2020 Challenge spans five years and has two clear phases:

  1. Up to 2018 – this covers the immediate actions both Government and delivery partners will take over the next 12-18 months to improve dementia care and support, awareness and research. Funding for these is already set, and the Implementation Plan describes in more detail how these actions will be achieved.
  2. 2018-2020 this covers longer term actions that will deliver all of the 2020 Challenge commitments. The actions included in this phase are indicative and in less detail. They may need to be altered or amended in future years to take into account funding allocations, emerging and planned research into science and medicine, and best practice in both clinical and social care.
The 50 commitments are split across four themes: risk reduction, health and care, awareness and social action, and research. Many of them can only be met through the joint efforts of multiple organisations, from government departments and arms-length bodies, to the NHS and local authorities, research institutions, and the charity and voluntary sector.

The Implementation Plan published on 6th March 2016 sets out how these commitments will be met.

Dementia 2020 – The Next Phase is an opportunity to consider progress of the Implementation Plan up to 2018 and will assess whether it has achieved the actions included as it moves into phase two. This conference will allow participants to hear from senior leaders from many of the key partner organisations involved in the 2020 Challenge.

The implementation provides a details for the priorities and actions up to 2018, it then summarises the further actions from 2018-2020. These will be considered further when progress is reviewed and the plan is refreshed in 2018, this conference will allow delegates to learn the new actions up to 2020 and hear more detailed delivery plans for them.

Govconnect's previous conferences in the 2020 series have been a huge success and provided strong foundations to build upon. Now in its third year the conference will incorporate a uniquely inclusive platform for collective discussion and debate.

The importance of carers and diagnosed service users having a voice at all Govconnect Dementia conferences is paramount and will again be a vital component for this year’s conference.

The UN convention on the rights of persons with disabilities reflects this view. We believe that legislation means nothing if it does not reach the people it is designed to benefit. As a consequence we are investing a large % of all conference revenues to fund bursaries for carers and service users, so as their views can be incorporated into the days discussions, in the hope they will contribute significantly to future policy and direction.
